With IPL franchises releasing their retained players list for the 2025 season, KL Rahul’s name stands out as one of the most notable releases. Known for his versatility as an opener, wicketkeeper, and former captain of two IPL teams, Rahul’s release from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) has attracted strong interest from franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and even his former team, LSG. This makes him one of the top contenders in the upcoming auction.

On Captaincy: Rahul’s Focus on Team Culture over Leadership

Despite his captaincy experience, Rahul has clarified that leading a team isn’t his top priority. “Captaincy is not my priority,” he shared in an interview on Star Sports. Rahul emphasized his desire to play for a team where he feels “loved, cared, and respected.” He added, “I’ve always been adaptable—whether it’s opening, playing in the middle order, keeping, or fielding. I’m open to leading if the team values my leadership, but it’s not a make-or-break factor for me.”

Leaving LSG: Ready for a New Chapter

Reflecting on his decision to part ways with LSG, where he captained for two seasons, Rahul explained his motivation to explore new opportunities. “I wanted to start fresh, seek out a team with a lighter atmosphere and more freedom. Sometimes, moving on allows you to find a better fit and grow in a different environment,” he said.

As Rahul enters the 2025 auction, his experience, skill, and adaptability make him one of the most appealing players for franchises aiming to enhance their rosters.
