Keshav Maharaj, Wiaan Mulder Named in South Africa’s Test Squad Despite Injury Concerns

South Africa has unveiled its Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan, scheduled to kick off with the Boxing Day Test at Centurion on December 26. Notably, Keshav Maharaj and Wiaan Mulder have been included despite their ongoing injury recoveries, adding intrigue to the team’s preparations.
Maharaj’s Fitness in Question
Spinner Keshav Maharaj sustained an acute groin strain during warm-ups ahead of the first ODI against Pakistan at Boland Park, Paarl. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that Maharaj will undergo a scan to assess the severity of the injury. His inclusion in the squad reflects the management’s optimism about his recovery, given his pivotal role in South Africa’s bowling attack.
Mulder Returns from Injury
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder is set to make his return after completing the final phase of his rehabilitation from a fractured right middle finger, which sidelined him during the second Test against Sri Lanka. Mulder’s availability adds versatility to the team, with CSA indicating that batter Matthew Breetzke may be released from the squad if Mulder is selected for the first Test.
Fresh Faces in the Squad
The squad also includes some exciting new faces. Corbin Bosch, the 30-year-old seamer, has received his maiden call-up to the Test team. Bosch’s stellar performances in first-class cricket, where he has taken 72 wickets at an average of 36.75 and contributed with the bat, highlight his potential as a valuable all-rounder. Bosch recently showcased his talent in the SA Invitational XI’s victory over the England Lions in Cape Town.
Uncapped pacer Kwena Maphaka, who was part of the squad against Sri Lanka, retains his spot. Head coach Shukri Conrad praised the additions, particularly Bosch, for adding depth and pace to the team’s attack.
The Road to the WTC Final
South Africa enters the series against Pakistan with a clear objective: securing a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final. With one more victory required to guarantee their place, the stakes are high. Head coach Conrad expressed confidence in the squad, emphasizing the importance of consistency and seizing opportunities against a formidable Pakistan side.
