Hazlewood Returns for Brisbane Test, Boland Makes Way

Josh Hazlewood has been confirmed fit for the third Test against India at the Gabba, with Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, announcing that Hazlewood will replace Scott Boland as the only change to the team.
Hazlewood had been sidelined for the second Test in Adelaide due to a side strain sustained in the series opener in Perth. Boland filled in admirably, claiming five key wickets across two innings. However, Hazlewood’s recovery progressed well, as demonstrated during fitness tests at Allan Border Field, where he bowled off his full run-up under the guidance of bowling coach Daniel Vettori.
“He’s had no hiccups,” Cummins said. “He had a really good bowl yesterday and earlier in Adelaide. The medical team is super confident.”
Boland Steps Aside – For Now
Boland, whose home Test bowling average of 13.54 is exceptional, will miss out despite his strong performance in Adelaide. Cummins acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but suggested Boland would likely return for one of the final two Tests of the series.
“It’s tough [leaving him out]; he was fantastic in Adelaide,” Cummins said. “But history suggests there’s always some natural attrition in a Test series. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get another crack at some point.”
Cummins hinted that Boland could feature in Melbourne, where he has an outstanding record, including his stunning debut against England in 2021, where he claimed 6 for 7.
Hazlewood’s Battle with Recurrent Side Injuries
Hazlewood revealed that his recent injury wasn’t a “typical side strain” but part of a recurring issue stemming from repetitive use, which has frustrated him over the past few years.
“It’s caused me a lot of trouble over the last few years,” Hazlewood admitted. “I had perfect prep this year, played the Shield game, and ticked all the boxes, but it still happened. So I was pretty annoyed for a few days.”
To minimize risk, Hazlewood bowled just two more overs after experiencing discomfort in Perth, a decision that Cummins supported to avoid a prolonged absence.
“We’ve seen it a few times where Joshy has pushed through a Test, and a little soreness turns into a month or two injury,” Cummins said.
Australia’s Focus on Fitness Management
Hazlewood’s swift recovery highlights Cricket Australia’s cautious approach to injury management, especially for key players in a packed international schedule.
Australia, buoyed by their strong showing in the first two Tests, will look to secure the series at the Gabba, with Hazlewood’s return adding firepower to an already potent bowling attack. Meanwhile, Boland remains in contention for future opportunities, reflecting the depth of Australia’s pace resources.
