Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of Pakistan T20I Series with Fractured Toe

South Africa’s pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the ongoing T20I series against Pakistan after scans revealed a fracture in his left big toe. Nortje, who initially missed the first match due to what was thought to be a contusion, will now consult an orthopedic specialist to determine his recovery timeline.
Replacement Announced
Uncapped seamer Dayyaan Galiem has been called up to the squad as Nortje’s replacement for the remaining two matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Nortje’s Recent Form and Injury Woes
Nortje last played in the Abu Dhabi T10 earlier this month but hasn’t featured in an international match since the T20 World Cup final in June. Despite being South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in that tournament, his availability has been limited due to recurring injuries. This marks his second injury in the last 15 months.
In September 2023, Nortje suffered a stress fracture that sidelined him for nine months. He returned to action during IPL 2024 before joining South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad. The fractured toe now adds to his struggles, raising questions about his fitness ahead of crucial upcoming tournaments.
Road Ahead
Nortje’s exclusion also impacts South Africa’s ODI plans under white-ball coach Rob Walter, with the Champions Trophy looming next year. Nortje was expected to play a key role in the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, beginning next Tuesday, but his participation is now highly unlikely.
However, Nortje may still regain match fitness ahead of the Champions Trophy, with the SA20 league starting on January 10. He is contracted to play for the Pretoria Capitals in the tournament, offering him a chance to return to competitive cricket.
A Growing Injury List for South Africa
Nortje’s absence adds to an already lengthy list of injured South African fast bowlers:
- Gerald Coetzee: Groin injury, out until January.
- Lungi Ngidi: Hip injury, out until January.
- Nandre Burger: Ruled out of the summer with a lower back stress fracture.
- Wiaan Mulder: Sidelined with a finger fracture; racing to be fit for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.
Managing Workload
To manage his body better post-injury, Nortje has opted out of a national contract with Cricket South Africa and has temporarily stepped away from red-ball cricket. This strategic move aims to extend his career and allow him to focus on limited-overs formats, where he remains a crucial asset for South Africa.
South Africa’s injury-hit bowling unit faces a challenging few months as they prepare for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan and other critical assignments leading to the Champions Trophy.
