Mohammed Shami Ruled Out of Final Border-Gavaskar Tests Due to Knee Swelling

Shami’s Knee Injury Sidelines Him for Remainder of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the fourth and fifth Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to swelling in his left knee, the BCCI announced in a press release. The update comes after India captain Rohit Sharma expressed the need for clarity from the National Cricket Academy regarding Shami’s fitness following India’s defeat in the Brisbane Test.

Shami, 33, had ramped up his workload in recent months, bowling 43 overs in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh in November before featuring in all nine games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He also undertook additional bowling sessions during the tournament to prepare for the demands of the Test format.

However, the increased joint loading has led to swelling in his left knee, which the BCCI medical team deemed a natural consequence of his increased bowling workload after a prolonged layoff.

BCCI Statement on Shami’s Fitness
“Following his performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shami exhibited minor swelling in his left knee due to increased joint loading. Based on the current medical assessment, his knee requires additional time for controlled exposure to bowling loads,” the BCCI stated.

Consequently, Shami will not be available for the final two Tests against Australia. The medical team has recommended further targeted strength and conditioning work at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence to aid his recovery and build the necessary bowling loads for Test cricket.

A Prolonged Road to Recovery
Shami has not represented India since the ODI World Cup final in November last year. Following the tournament, he underwent surgery for a heel injury in February, from which he has since recovered. The BCCI confirmed his progress but emphasized the need for continued monitoring of his left knee.

He was also left out of Bengal’s squad for their opening Vijay Hazare Trophy game on December 21, with the BCCI noting that his participation in the tournament would depend on his knee’s condition.

Impact on India’s Bowling Attack
Shami’s absence from the crucial stages of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy puts additional pressure on India’s pace attack. While the team has depth in the bowling department, Shami’s experience and ability to generate reverse swing in subcontinental conditions will be missed.

Looking Ahead
As India eyes the World Test Championship final and key upcoming series, ensuring Shami’s long-term fitness remains a priority. While the knee injury is a setback, the BCCI’s careful management of his recovery aims to bring him back to peak form for the rigors of international cricket.
