With the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy series around the corner, the spotlight is on several players navigating through lean phases, including Australia’s Steve Smith. While Smith has cemented his legacy as a Test cricket powerhouse, his T20 career remains less consistent, particularly in the IPL, where he has yet to make a major impact. After going unsold in the previous auction, Smith has now expressed interest in returning to the IPL, hoping to be picked up in the upcoming auction.

In an interview with Fox Cricket, Smith spoke candidly about his IPL absence and his eagerness to return to the franchise league. “I hope so,” Smith said when asked if he’d like to return to the IPL. “I thought I played quite nicely in international T20s. I’d certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I’ve thrown my name in the hat, so let’s see how we go.”

Smith hasn’t featured in the IPL since 2021 but entered his name for the 2024 season auction. Although he wasn’t picked in the initial rounds, he has proven his T20 prowess elsewhere, notably in Major League Cricket (MLC). Leading the Washington Freedom to their first MLC championship, Smith scored 336 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.67, including a match-winning 88 off 52 balls in the final against the San Francisco Unicorns, earning him the Player of the Match award.

Besides the IPL, Smith will also participate in Australia’s Big Bash League, representing the Sydney Sixers.
