Tilak Varma Breaks Suresh Raina’s 14-Year-Old Record

Tilak Varma etched his name into the history books by breaking a 14-year-old record held by Suresh Raina after scoring a magnificent 51-ball century against South Africa in the third T20I of the ongoing four-match series at Supersport Park, Centurion, on Wednesday (November 13). His breathtaking knock helped India post a huge total of 219, putting them in a commanding position to take a 2-1 lead in the series.
Tilak, who was promoted to number three after Sanju Samson’s early dismissal for a duck in the first over, showcased his aggressive approach right from the start. He was perfectly complemented by Abhishek Sharma, and together they forged a rapid 107-run partnership for the third wicket in just 50 balls. Abhishek’s quickfire 50 off 20 balls was a valuable contribution before he was dismissed. Tilak reached his half-century in just 32 balls, and despite the loss of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh, he kept the momentum going, ensuring India set a daunting target.
Tilak remained unbeaten on 107 from 56 balls, becoming the youngest player in history to score a T20I century against South Africa. He also became the first player to score a T20I ton before turning 23 against the Proteas, a record previously held by India’s Suresh Raina, who achieved the feat in the 2010 T20 World Cup.
